Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is a chemist-artist whose installations and sculptures explore the effects of our participation in and co-presence with technology. The results can be imbalances, instability, decay, but also regeneration.

For the identity of this exhibition, I created custom letterforms derived from the SFMOMA brand typeface. The new letters better illustrate the instability and interactivity of the artworks themselves while still aligning with the overall museum brand.

The core color of the identity is a rich, saturated blue-purple, a color that can be mistaken for either, and exists very much at the edge of both, signally the color’s own instability in remaining a single, static state. The vibrancy helps draw more attention to the marketing banners in the middle of San Francisco’s downtown noise.
