Chloë Bass: Soft Services (2022–ongoing) is an outdoor installation commissioned by Henry Art Gallery featuring a series of 14 stone benches placed throughout Seattle’s Volunteer Park.
This installation explores the concept of what true care means—“soft services” being a term that was used to describe care efforts made during the AIDS epidemic that was not covered by traditional healthcare. The interplay of the weaving type illustrates the differing nature of these forms of care.
The color palette drew from the metallic tinge of the light-responsive pigment on the stones as well as the natural colors of the native flora in the park.
