The interplay of the weaving type illustrates the differing nature of these forms of care.The color palette drew from the metallic tinge of the light-responsive pigment on the stones as well as the natural colors of the native flora in the park. It displayed staged photographs and a video piece that told of her and her family’s story of immigrating from then-USSR Moscow to what ended up being her second childhood home, Santa Barbara.I collaborated with the artist closely on the identity and exhibition graphics to ensure that the visuals fully evoked the nostalgia, humor, and playfulness of this very personal story. It emulates the shape of the keyhole arch that is in the title sequence of the TV soap, further bridging that connection. Knowing this, we decided on more traditionally feminine colors.We paired a bright magenta title wall with the title cut in reflective silver vinyl to achieve a more retro / 90s aesthetic that was felt in the artist’s photos. I led the exhibition identity design for this show that extended to various touchpoints such as the title wall and in-gallery signage, digital ads, marketing posters that were distributed throughout the city, and an accompanying publication. They are not explicitly linked together by any theme, but threads inevitably emerge by association and through their proximity in the galleries. In addition, a strong visual graphic was needed to tie it all together and to market the exhibition because one, it was a group show without a particular “main” piece/artist to market, and two, we did not have prior photography as many of the works were new commissions and/or made in situ. The use of negative space in the on-site banners directly relate to the open floor plan for the exhibition—we knocked down most of the temporary walls. black and white photos of the French photographer. For the title wall, which is a pretty large expanse, I worked with a local sign fabricator to create the hanging metal letters. Since Brassaï plays with light and shadow frequently in his work, the title wall was spotlighted so that shadows were created from the 3D letters. Sides of the letters were also painted with onyx paint to enhance the shadows. A photo mural was placed right atop the staircase as a welcoming gesture for visitors arriving from the stairs.
